Robber on Parole Killed While Attempting to Thwart Robbery
55 year old Bobby Butler was a career felon, having been arrested more than 20 times and having been convicted of 9 felonies. One of the felonies he was convicted of was robbery; others included drug distribution and sales, theft and assault with a deadly weapon.
Butler was killed after attempting to intercede in a mugging. A 26 year old woman whom Butler rode the train with was being held up when he shouted at the mugger to stop. The man then turned and fired at Butler, shooting him in the stomach. He was able to run away on foot with the woman's purse.
The robbery occurred at the Pink Line station on the 2100 block of South Millard Avenue. The woman did not know Butler but had exchanged pleasantries with him before the shooting. The police are still searching for the mugger, who will be charged with murder and armed robbery.
