Two Women Found Guilty in Acid Attack Case
More than two years after the attack, two women have each been convicted of 3 counts of heinous battery for hiring three teenagers to throw acid on another woman, and then beat her with a bat and steal her purse in order to cover up the motive. Garcia believed that the victim, 50 year old Esperanza Medina, was seeing her ex-husband and wanted revenge.
Each woman plead not guilty to the charges and blamed the other for plotting and executing it. Ofelia Garcia, 60, and her former daughter-in-law, Maria Olvera-Garcia, 37, both face up to 45 years in prison for the crime.
Medina suffered 3rd degree burns on 25% of her body, and has undergone more than a dozen operations and skin grafts. She is permanently disfigured.
All three of the teens who carried out the act plead guilty to juvenile charges as part of a plea bargain for cooperation.
