Federal Investigators Bust Major Heroin Drug Ring
Nine men and women have been arrested on suspicion of operating a major drug distribution ring in both Harvey and Robbins, two suburbs on Chicago's south side. Three people who are believed to be involved in the drug ring have warrants out for their arrest, but police officers have not yet found them. They are facing between five years and life in prison. If convicted, they may also have to pay as much as $2 million in court fees, fines and restitution.
A group of federal agents and local police worked to take down this heroin operation, which was selling sometimes $3,000 a day. The investigation lasted more than two years, and included FBI special agents, the South Suburban Violent Crimes Task Force and investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Drug possession and distribution for heroin has increased in recent years, and it is said to be a problem that stretches across all socio-economic lines.
