Traffic Court Lawyer Arrested for Fraud, Not Actually an Attorney
The Cook County sheriff's department has arrested a man who was posing as a traffic court attorney. 47 year old Tahir Malik had allegedly pretended to be a licensed attorney representing people on misdemeanor traffic court offenses. After he was arrested, his briefcase was searched and it was discovered that he had acted as an attorney in courthouses across Illinois, from Bridgeview to Skokie to Chicago.
His fraud was discovered when a clerk at the courthouse and a deputy grew suspicious of him. He alleged that he was employed by a law firm, but the law firm readily denied any affiliation. He was then arrested for contempt of court.
Malik has allegedly been running this fraud for years, and many of his former clients have pleaded guilty and been sentenced. It is believed that he has represented people in more than 60 traffic court cases. He has a previous criminal record including felony
burglary, shoplifting and forgery.
