Woman Who Started Brush Fires Arrested for Arson
A woman in San Rafael believed to have started two brush fires was taken into custody last weekend.
According to police reports, 38-year-old Hope Windom visited the San Rafael police department last week to speak with officers about the fires. However, Sgt. Mike Vergara commented that "She basically wanted to talk to us about the fires, and as we spoke to her more we started to feel like she was involved in it." Officers now believe that she used a lighter or matches to start the fires behind the Falkirk Cultural Center.
The first fire was started around 1 p.m. near a homeless encampment; the second fire began just an hour or so later a hundred yards away from the first. It took 30 firefighters to contain both fires; luckily, nobody was injured. Windom now faces charges of arson.
