Chicago Detective Sues Own Department, Wins
A Chicago police detective was awarded $200,000 in damages Thursday after suing his own department for violation of his civil rights and false arrest.
Tactical officers arrested Vincent Humphrey outside his home after suspecting that gang activity was occurring at his home. Humphrey identified himself as an officer, but failed to produce identification stating that he believed he had left his wallet in his home.
The officers involved stated that Humphrey was combative when they asked to go inside his home to see his identification, closing the door on them when they attempted to enter his home. Officers handcuffed him, thinking he might be a police impersonator because he couldn't produce ID and due to his behavior.
Humphrey sued his department, winning $200,000 for the false arrest. Six officers were ordered to pay punitive damages of up to $15,000 each.
