Police Take Down Sex Trafficking Ring
Thanks to new legislation signed into law last year, Chicago police officers were able to successfully bring down a sex trafficking ring.
Officers have been working for 18 months to investigate and bring down a sex crime ring conducted by gang members in the area. In total, nine people were arrested for participating in the abduction and threatening of young girls, some as young as 12 years old. Under the protection of one Illinois law, officers were able to use wiretapping to infiltrate gang boundaries. Over the 18-month period, officers learned how gang members would lure young girls off the streets, often with threats, into prostitution.
These young girls were often approached in public places, such as malls and train stations, and told that they would be hurt. At times, the men threatened to hurt the girls' families if they did not comply. As a result, dozens of girls went missing across the city, forced to work as prostitutes under the threat of losing their lives. The arrested individuals all face a variety of sex crimes charges that could land them lifetime sentences if convicted.
