After 5 years and 3 months in prison, Jerry Hobbs is free - from prison and from the accusations that he murdered his 8 year old daughter and her 9 year old friend. The victims, Laura Hobbs and Krystal Tobias, were found by Hobbs in Zion Park on Mother's Day in 2005.
Hobbs was convicted of the 2005 kills after signing a statement written by police that admitted his guilt. Although he later recanted and his defense attorney said that the confession was coerced, it was ruled admissible and Hobbs was sentenced .
Even after the prosecution found out that the semen on Laura Hobbs' body did not match her father's, they continued to seek the death penalty, claiming that the sexual assault did not have to be connected with the murder. Police continue to admit no wrongdoing and deny that Hobbs was coerced.
Hobbs has left Cook County and is returning to Texas to live with his mother. His lawyer said that he did not want to be considered a victim, as the real victims are the two girls who were murdered.
