When Carlina White was only 19 days old, she was kidnapped from the Harlem Hospital by a woman who had been dressed as a nurse. Her parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson, had lost hope that they would someday find her. Carlina's new mother renamed her Nejdra Nance, and Carlina has said that she always thought that the woman who raised her was not her real mother. The woman was a
drug addict and
abused Carlina, and when Carlina became pregnant at 16, her "mother" could not produce a birth certificate so that Carlina could obtain the necessary prenatal care.
It was not until Carlina moved to Atlanta with her now 6 year old daughter that she took steps to find her real parents. She received assistance in her search from the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Now, she and her parents have been reunited and they say it is like a dream.
