Residents in the Chicago community express their fear not only for gangs and criminals, but also the police who are supposed to enforce the law. According to one 17 year old, he said it is a common occurrence for police to come into his neighborhood and frisk anyone around. So much so, that he and his friends have created a joke every time a cop car drives past. Another young teen claims his only interaction with a cop involved him getting corned by the officer and then having cigarette smoke blown into his face during questioning, and then allowing him to move along.
Many young teenage boys share their concern that even a large number of girls are often treated this way by officers in town. One boy says if you even ask why you're being questioned they will get mad, claiming the officers act as though they have power over the community. A large number of people within Chicago claim while there may be a large gun violence problem in the area, many people have grown accustomed to not trusting the police officers either due to negative encounters.
As officers in Chicago express that a lot of damage has been done in the past by past law enforcement officials and they are seeking to make the community a safer place for the people, not the other way around. They are implementing change such as training the officers how to work in these communities to earn respect as authority figures, rather than enforcing fear in the people.
